Russian ghostie pics (long exposure)

Alexey Titarenko's "City of Shadows" is a series of haunting, gorgeous long-exposure shots of street-scenes in St Petersburg, Russia. The long exposure-times turn the people in the shots into ghosts and suggestions of motion. Link, via Boingboing.

I remember reading about an early image - taken in a square in Paris in the 1830s full of people, but the long exposure time, something like 15 minutes, meant that no one could be seen, just a slight hint of swirling masses leaving the barest trace in the image.
Except for one man. He was having his shoes shined, standing still and emerges into the image as the first human recorded through a photographic process.
The type of image you've shown here comes closer to how I think people actually experience time - even compared to moving images, which force a narrative. The long exposure in this still seems closer to how a person really experiences the sight of people passing, leaving a trail in the memory.
(Sorry, a painter on the loose on the internet again.)
